The Initial Dirty Diesel Campaign Launch: In May of 1997, WE ACT launched a major public awareness campaign urging the Transit Authority (TA) to commit to modifying these depots to accommodate natural gas buses, and to invest in clean-fuel buses only.

The Dirty Diesel Campaign Continuing Struggle: In November of 2000, WE ACT and several Northern Manhattan community residents filed a Title VI complaint with the United States Department of Transportation (DOT) charging the MTA with violating the civil rights of Northern Manhattan residents (see Full Press Release). This complaint was filed under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, which states that no entity that receives Federal funding can discriminate against people on the basis of race.
